Job Overview

The Vice President, Merchandising is responsible for developing strategic merchandising strategies to maximize profitability, drive sales, improve gross, margins and inventory turns. The VP, Merchandising leads the product strategy across all channels, including Party City's North America and Halloween seasonal stores, International and Franchise operations, and Ecommerce/Omni-channel businesses. This role plays an integral part in guiding the brand's merchandising and product development teams to leverage our vertical integration throughout Party City Holdings. As a mentor and coach, the VP, Merchandising guides the development of Party City's product assortment and pricing strategies across categories. The VP leads an organization of Category Managers/Directors, Associate Category Managers, and Merchandise Assistants. This role is responsible to support the delivery of the brand's mission to make it easy to create unforgettable moments, uphold the company's values and create a great place to work and shop.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Create and lead a clear vision and strategic direction for the merchandising strategy across assigned categories and brand channels; monitor execution to maximize performance and results
  • Influence direct reports and Design to ensure that we consistently develop products that are compelling to the customer, on trend, differentiated from the marketplace, priced appropriately, and drive revenue growth
  • Lead category merchandising team to develop industry leading product, assortment and pricing strategies that grow revenue, margin and profit
  • Partner with your cross-functional peers in Planning, Sourcing & Production to develop transformative processes that maximize efficiency and effectiveness while managing revenue growth and inventory turn
  • Develop effective merchandising and pricing strategies that are responsive to customer insights, competitive analysis and business performance including markdown and clearance strategies that protect and maximize margin
  • Implement test and learn strategies to optimize ROI for new products and categories across our everyday and seasonal businesses
  • Ensure that in store and online presentations evoke the brand's mission and personality and the product is featured in alignment with merchandising strategy and investment; Ensuring that presentations are tailored to markets across our store footprint
  • Develop and mentor direct reports to maximize their performance and potential; cultivating a culture of development and succession
  • Develop and communicate sales and financial goals by category; Achieve Gross Margin and Inventory targets
  • Review/approve vendors and vendor plans, as well as assortment plans

Job Requirements

Skills Required:

  • Ability to think critically and understand target customer to anticipate future trends and incorporate them into organizational plans
  • Well-developed ethical standards of professional behavior and strong leadership background with a variety of merchandising concepts, processes and experiences.
  • Strong leadership skills and experience leading cross functional teams and influencing across an organization to drive multi-channel strategies.
  • Proven track record for developing compelling product assortments in multiple categories.
  • Ability to effectively manage in a fast-paced work environment, influencing leaders across multiple disciplines to get important things done and to drive change
  • Ability to drive and lead accelerated growth.
  • Possess a passion for understanding the customer, market and competitive trends as a means of identifying the right product at the right price; curious and entrepreneurial
  • Demonstrated ability to balance creative and analytical thinking, intuition and data, to build a compelling assortment including exploring new lines of business and partnerships
  • Possesses excellent judgment and the ability to act decisively in situations requiring quick but thorough analysis and decision-making, while understanding when and how to appropriately escalate issues
  • Possesses strong communication skills, and ability to prioritize based on changing business needs
  • Possesses an entrepreneurial spirit and a willingness to learn and take smart risks to deliver great results


  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • Have experience leading the merchandising strategies in an industry leading direct-to-consumer retail business, experience with large sku counts
  • Experience at the VP/DMM level is a plus;
  • Excellent understanding of merchandising financials and the ability to manage profitability
